15 Celebrities Who Hit Rock Bottom and Bounced Back

    The pressures of Hollywood can drive some celebrities to do some stupid things and jeopardize their careers. Fortunately, many of them are able to bounce back with hard work and determination. The stars and starlets in the slideshow above are shining examples of just that. We applaud these celebrities for picking up the pieces and continuing to be successful.

    Robert Downey Jr.

    Most famous for Iron Man, RDJ landed in jail in 1997 and 1999 after several drug-related incidents involving cocaine, crack, and heroin. After a few more drug arrests in 2000 and 2001, RDJ spent a year in rehab and finally became clean. He has since become one of the most well-known celebrities in Hollywood and tops the Forbes list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors.

    Drew Barrymore

    The child actress famous for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was exposed to the Hollywood party scene at such a young age she landed in rehab at the age of only thirteen. After three stints in rehab she finally sobered up and went on to become a successful adult actress and producer of movies like Donnie Darko and Charlie’s Angels.

    Britney Spears

    When the former pop princess split from Kevin Federline in 2006, she found herself in and out of rehab throughout 2007. After her infamous head-shaving fiasco, Britney lost custody of her sons and was hospitalized for a mental evaluation in early 2008. She was treated for bipolar disorder and has since released two No. 1 albums and has been a judge on a season of The X Factor.

    Elton John

    The legendary musician’s addiction to alcohol and cocaine caused him to almost overdose in 1975 during “Elton Week” in Los Angeles. He described his life as “tragic” and admitted it came very close to ending at the height of his drug problem. In 1992 he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation and has since raised more than $275 million for the cause. His memoir, Love Is the Cure: On Life, Loss and the End of AIDS was released in 2012.

    Nicole Richie

    The adopted daughter of Lionel Richie and former reality star blamed her drug abuse, eating disorder and jail time in her early 20s on pure boredom. It seems like she has grown up since then after marrying Good Charlotte band member Joel Madden and giving birth to two children. She is now a designer for her fashion line, House of Harlow.

    Demi Lovato

    The former Disney star physically attacked a dancer while touring with the Jonas Brother’s in late 2010. She later checked into rehab and spoke about her struggles with bipolar disorder, cutting, drug and alcohol abuse, and an eating disorder. Since receiving treatment she’s released a top 5 album and judged two seasons of The X Factor.

    Winona Ryder

    The actress famous for films like Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands checked into a psychiatric hospital in 1990 for exhaustion, depression, and anxiety at the age of 19. Then in 2001 she was caught shoplifting from a department store and was found in possession of eight different kinds of prescription painkillers. After being convicted of grand theft and vandalism, Winona laid low for a few years until appearing in Star Trek and Black Swan.


    The rapper went into rehab in 2005 for prescription drug abuse after being rushed to the hospital for an overdose. He relapsed soon after but ultimately managed to kick his habit and has successfully stayed sober since 2008. All three albums he’s released have been No. 1 hits.

    Kate Moss

    As a high fashion super model, Moss is well-known for popularizing the look called “heroin chic” in the early 1990s. In 2005 she was filmed snorting coke and it resulted in her losing millions in endorsement deals. The boycott was short-lived and she was back a year later as the face of Versace and has a design collaboration with fashion chain Top Shop.

    Martha Stewart

    When the food and home goods mogul was arrested and jailed for lying to investigators about being involved with insider trading, the world was shocked. Some people speculated on whether she would be able to bounce back after she served her sentence. She proved her resiliency and continues to be a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman.

    Steven Tyler

    The Aerosmith frontman claims to have spent over $5 million on drugs in the ‘70s and ‘80s and says his addiction took his children away and blew his marriages. He got sober in the mid-80s but relapsed in 2009 and went to rehab. Since then Tyler has been a judge on American Idol and says he is officially done with drugs.


    Singer Fergie became addicted to crystal meth in 2001 after her girl group, Wild Orchid, was dropped from their record label. It got to the point where she thought she was being followed by SWAT and FBI teams. She claims she was able to quit after going to church and making a promise to God. Fergie eventually found success with the Black Eyed Peas and later on flourished in her solo career.

    Jodie Sweetin

    Most famous for her role as Stephanie Tanner on the ‘90s sitcom, Full House, Sweetin turned to alcohol and drugs soon after the show ended. After having her daughter in 2008, she claimed she was sober but continued to snort cocaine and even drove drunk with her daughter in the car. Now at 27, she is clean and has written about her life as a drug addict in her memoir unSweetined.

    Amanda Bynes

    The former Nickelodeon star shocked many after getting multiple DUIs in 2012, tweeting inappropriately and dressing outlandishly. After a court-ordered stint in rehab in December 2013, Bynes is doing much better and is currently attending fashion school in Orange County, CA.
